I was born and raised in San Diego, CA, earned an A.B. at the University of California, Berkeley in 1966, and M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of California, San Diego in 1969 and 1974. After teaching at Penn State, the University of California, Riverside, and Stanford, between 1973 and 1985, I have been at Hunter College since 1985. I live in New York City and have a son, Nick, pictured below a few years ago.

I have published two monographs, The Development of the Idea of History in Antiquity (1982) and Plato: A Guide for the Perplexed (2007). I also wrote a Study Guide for the logic textbook Thinking Logically (1988). Nine chapters that I wrote have appeared in anthologies of scholarship on Plato; thirteen articles and twenty book reviews in a variety of philosophy journals. I have edited two international, interdisciplinary collections of essays, Plato’s Dialogues: New Studies and Interpretations (1993) and Who Speaks For Plato? Studies in Platonic Anonymity (2000).I have given lectures at various colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada, Italy, and Greece.

I have also served in several other editorial positions: as Book Review Editor, Journal of the History of Philosophy (1990 – 1997), as Editor for Ancient Philosophy, Columbia History of Western Philosophy (1994-96) and presently I am Editor, Journal of the History of Philosophy (1998 – 2003), one of the leading philosophy journals in the U.S. and the premier journal specializing in the history of Western philosophy in the world. Most recently i was Editor of The Continuum Companion to Plato (2012; 2015)
